NOTES
A FAREWELL TO ARMS Shot in 1957 by Charles Vidor and starring Rock Hudson and Jennifer Jones, this film is the best screen rendition to date of the famed novel by Ernest Hemingway. The story is about the romance between an American soldier and a British Red Cross nurse taking place against the background of WWI: the music by veteran Mario Nascimbene adds pulse and drama to this story of an ill-fated love.
The only Italian composer of his era to be welcome in Hollywood, Mario Nascimbene brought a new way to conceive soundtrack for American cinema, and this score is a fine example of this: though a big production starring Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner under the direction of Joseph Mankiewicz, THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA was scored for a small, evocative ensemble, using an acoustic guitar as main instrument. The effect is charming and striking.
