NOTES
LA VIOLENZA: QUINTO POTERE t is a brilliant, tough depiction of Sicilian Mafia and its ferocious habits and rituals, as analyzed during a trial when two opposite gangs are judged. Many are the murders and bloodsheds, many are the accused, but as usual only small fry will pay the reckoning. The film, directed in 1969 by Florestano Vancini, features one of the most powerful and striking scores Morricone ever devoted to political and Mafia cinema. This score is on CD for the first time. UNA BREVE STAGIONE Directed in 1969 by Renato Castellani and starring Christopher Jones and Pia Degermark, tells about a young American man living in Rome, who is arrested for theft. He daringly escapes but unwillingly kills a prison guard: then, feeling lost, he decides to spend his hiding with the girl he would marry. They live hours of full, stirring happiness and, when caught by policemen, they both commit suicide. For this drama Morricone wrote a moving, sad score perfectly fitting happiness and sorrow of these unlucky lovers' last hours. The score is on CD for the first time.
