With Autostop Rosso Sangue (Hitch-Hike, 1977), Morricone composed one of his most fascinating and unconventional scores, written for the psychological road thriller directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile and starring Franco Nero, Corinne Cléry and David Hess.

Shot across the wild landscapes of Abruzzo (Italy) but set along the imaginary highways of California, the film follows a couple’s descent into fear and violence after picking up a dangerous hitchhiker. A unique entry in Festa Campanile’s filmography, it stands out for its dark and radical tone, far removed from the comedies that made the director famous.

Morricone’s music mirrors this psychological tension: pieces such as Autostop and Sunshine open with melodic, almost carefree themes that evoke freedom and lightness, only to be disrupted by obsessive repetitions and unsettling harmonies. Tracks like Violazione violenta and Nevrosi sulle strade delve into the film’s more disturbing moods through dissonances, percussive tension and silence. Meanwhile, lyrical moments such as Ultima occasione and Altri tempi add a fragile, melancholy beauty to the score’s emotional contrasts.

This 2026 edition, the first reissue since 1977, features a meticulous restoration from the original master tapes and a new high-definition remaster that brings out the full dynamic range and timbral complexity of the recording, highlighting Morricone’s unparalleled ability to translate inner turmoil into sound.
