RED EROS: A Selection of Italian Erotic Giallo Sounds 1993-2003
A cinematic cocktail that showcases an evolution – although always coherent with stylings and references of the “Italian thriller” genre, with its characteristic roots deeply grounded in the 60s that subsequently evolve into a more specific and iconic artistic form in terms of narration, exposition, ethics and aesthetics of the “thrilling” 70s. During the 80s and 90s and after films such as “Basic Instinct”, the erotic aspect begins to define a more specific subgenre in the thriller cauldron and Italian cinema follows suit. From the dark fairytale featuring a femme fatale in the “Craving Desire”, all the way to the mysteries of the dark, ambiguous and unpredictable characters from “The Final Scoop” and “Bad Inclination” from the director Campanella, this collection tells – with its symphonic and synthetic sounds - this appearance of the puzzling and unfathomable modeled through by sentiment, intrigue, passion, authenticity but also deviation, morbidity and even heartbreaking hate, with intense and expressive commentary. Massara, like a very able couturier equipped with a baton and overflowing with ingenuity, creativity and emotional experience of a pentagram demiurge, weaves tailor made suits conceived from music for each film and by doing so he creates an additional dimension to each character but also, in the process, gives origin to an entirely new genre within the Italian national cinematography that even today leaves very visible and indelible red marks.
