“Il faro in capo al mondo (The Light at the Edge of the World)” è un film del 1971 diretto da Kevin Billington, tratto da un romanzo di Jules Verne. Un’avventura cupa e solitaria ambientata su un’isola sperduta al largo di Capo Horn, dove un gruppo di pirati guidato da Jonathan Kongre (un cattivissimo Yul Brynner) prende possesso di un faro con l’obiettivo di far naufragare le navi per poi saccheggiarle.

Il protagonista, interpretato da Kirk Douglas, è l’ultimo guardiano sopravvissuto che si ritrova in un estenuante scontro tra uomo e natura, civiltà e barbarie. Il film è silenzioso, rarefatto, a tratti quasi esistenziale. E a dare voce a tutto ciò che non viene detto è la colonna sonora intensa e malinconica di Piero Piccioni.

Piccioni, maestro nel combinare jazz, archi classici e sonorità rarefatte, qui compone una colonna sonora sorprendentemente introspettiva. Niente fanfare da film d’azione: la musica è sottile, liquida, spesso costruita su melodie in minore e armonie sospese che riflettono perfettamente il senso di isolamento, paura e determinazione.

Il tema principale è struggente, con archi avvolgenti e leggere incursioni di pianoforte, come onde che si infrangono malinconicamente contro la roccia. Non c’è enfasi, non c’è trionfalismo: c’è solo l’eco della resistenza silenziosa di un uomo contro il buio.

La colonna sonora di “Il faro in capo al mondo” è una perla nascosta della produzione di Piccioni, meno nota di altre sue partiture più “urbane” o sofisticate, ma ugualmente potente. È musica che si muove sotto pelle, che non cerca il colpo di scena ma si insinua lentamente nella mente e nel cuore dello spettatore.
